Layover: Cologne, Germany / 4 hours
3 places in one day? Don’t mind if I do! Our travel from Dam to Berlin was divided by a 4 hour lay over in Cologne. This was actually by choice in order to break up what would have been a long train journey! It was just over 3 hours from Dam to Cologne so a nice leg stretch was well appreciated!
We were able to ditch the main part of our backpack in a locker at Cologne station so we could just take our smaller packs.
Side note: I must do a post on our backpacks because they are the bomb and couldn’t recommend them anymore!
Back to Cologne: The main two attractions we wanted to see in Cologne and really the only main ones were the Cathedral and the Hohenzollern bridge – their main bridge and the face of the city.
We took half a step out of the central station and the Cathedral is right there in your face, literally BAM! Couldn’t get closer if you tried! A very beautiful sight at that! A very historical gothic cathedral which houses the largest ringing bell in the world. It’s that loud they only ring it on Christmas and New Year.

We then walked along the Rhine river, the main river running through Cologne. A sunny grass area ran parallel to the bridge, perfect for a spot of picnic in this weather!
We headed towards the other side of the river in order to see both the cathedral and bridge in the perfect snapshot we’ve seen on Google for the whole lead up to our trip. There is nothing better than seeing something you’ve seen online for months with your own eyes and actually being there. A great sense of accomplishment!

I wouldn’t be able to comment on the rest of Cologne however our 4 hour stop gave us plenty of time to see the main sights and bask in the sunshine admiring the view!
A walk over the Hohenzollern Bridge took us right back into the heart of central station and now back on the road again for 4 hours to Berlin!
Peace and love,
